2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe with 603 hp and more.

The latest Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe should add one word to your expectations and definition of a tall luxury crossover. That word is "goodbye."

On Tuesday, the German automaker unveiled the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S Coupe with an electric twin-turbo V-8, 22-inch wheels, and a sport-tuned air suspension system.

It will sit above the more powerful GLE Coupe and the 2021 Mercedes-AMG GLE53 Coupe when it goes on sale in the United States in the fall of 2020.

Turbo and electronic

Like all AMG models, it starts with what's under the hood: a twin-turbo AMG-handcrafted 4.0-liter V-8 that produces 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, combined with a 48-volt electric system. 9-speed automatic transmission sends power to all four 22-inch wheels.

According to Mercedes-AMG, the nimble crossover SUV accelerates from 0-60 mph in 3.7 seconds and reaches an electronically limited top speed of 174 mph.

The powertrain has seven drive modes that modify engine response, transmission, suspension, and steering: comfort, sport, sport+, independent, race, trail, and sand.

The standard air suspension, adaptive dampers, and active roll bar help keep the large, high-floor hatchback upright and tied to the 48-volt electrical system. The suspension has three separate drive modes: Comfort, Sport, and Sport+. The system can level the crossover for heavier loads or lower the GLE63 S coupe's ride height at speeds above 74 mph to improve fuel economy.

To control wheel slip and aid acceleration out of corners, an electronic locking rear differential is standard.

Brake power comes from six-piston fixed front calipers that grab 15.7-inch front rotors, single-piston floating calipers, and 14.6-inch discs at the rear. Upgraded carbon ceramic brake rotors will be added to the options list to remove mass and prevent brake seizure on the race track.

Cute but Aggressive

The GLE63 S coupe adds a more aggressive face to the pretty SUV. The Panamericana grille instantly connects the GLE63 S Coupe to the rest of Affalterbach's performance cars, and the gaping intakes on either side of the front bumper are poised to suck in every bit of air that feeds the turbocharged V8 engine.

The steep roofline is carried over from other GLE models, but the fenders give the GLE63 S a bulldog look. At the rear, AMG-exclusive quad square exhaust tips bark out the 4.0-liter's song.

On the interior, the GLE coupe features Nappa leather, AMG badging, a three-spoke flat-bottom AMG steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles, and AMG drive unit steering wheel buttons for changing vehicle parameters on the fly, giving it an AMG The dashboard and doors are covered in carbon fiber. The dashboard and doors have carbon fiber trim.

Mercedes-Benz has not revealed pricing for the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S coupe, which will arrive in the U.S. in the fall of 2020, but it is expected to start at around $115,000, similar to the current model.
