The next Ford Mustang will arrive in 2022 as a 2023 model, the job posting confirms.

Ford is developing a redesigned seventh generation of the Mustang, and a recent job posting indicates that the car will arrive in 2022 as a 2023 model.

The job posting, discovered by a Mustang 6G forum member, was posted by Ford on Linkedin in January and seeks a "wind noise/road noise/air leak factory vehicle team (PVT) engineer" to work on the current Mustang and redesigned models. The current Mustang is the S550.

Originally scheduled for 2021, the delay may have something to do with Ford's efforts to develop a redesigned Mustang based on the CD6 platform that debuted in the 2020 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator twin models It is. Recall, Ford announced in 2018 that it would transition its future lineup to five highly modular platforms.

While the move to modular platforms will bring economies of scale, there is concern that the redesigned Mustang will be larger than the current model, which is 188.3 inches long and has a 107.1-inch wheelbase. While we don't like the sound of a larger Mustang, the important thing would be weight. The current Mustang GT with manual transmission already weighs 3,743 pounds, and we would not want it to get any heavier.

The payoff for moving to a modular platform, especially the CD6, should help expand the Mustang's appeal by allowing Ford to integrate hybrid and all-wheel drive systems. What is not clear, however, is whether Ford's promised Mustang hybrid has also been postponed. The gas-electric pony car is expected to be available in 2020, Ford said at the time of the 2017 announcement.

Given that sales of the current Mustang remain strong (Ford sold nearly 72,500 units in the U.S. in 2019) and new variants are still to come, the delayed schedule for the redesigned Mustang is not a big surprise. There are also rumors that Chevrolet is planning to phase out the Camaro, which would mean less competition for the Mustang down the road.
