Ford Ranger Reportedly Developing Raptor with V-8 Engine

When Ford unveiled the Ranger Raptor in early 2018, many were surprised that the only powertrain offered was a diesel-fueled four-cylinder.

Ford went the diesel route because the vehicle was not intended to be sold in the U.S., but as the Blue Oval is reportedly working on a gasoline engine swap, it seems this decision may have alienated many potential buyers.

Wheels reported Thursday that Ford is working on a V-8 engine swap for the Ranger Raptor for a 2021 launch. The engine in question is Ford's familiar 5.0-liter V-8, and the mid-size pickup truck's output could rival the 450 horsepower of the full-size F-150 Raptor.

The project will reportedly be undertaken by Ford's Australian subsidiary, with local firms handling the engineering work. Nevertheless, the enhanced Ranger Raptor will be offered through a Ford dealer and, according to the report, has a full factory warranty.

Unfortunately, Ford has no plans to sell the Ranger Raptor in the United States, at least for this generation. However, there is a company in California that can convert a local Ranger to Raptor specifications. They will probably offer a V-8 conversion as well.
