Dyson has unveiled a new EV with 600 miles of range and 536 horsepower.

It was only last October that I learned that Dyson, famous for its bagless vacuum cleaners, had canceled plans for an electric car that was to be developed in England and produced in Singapore.

When the project was cancelled, development had already reached an advanced stage, but information about the car was slow to come in. Overall length is 196 inches.

Codenamed N256, it was designed from the ground up, with all components, including the battery and motor, designed in-house. According to Dyson, the car was to be launched with a conventional lithium-ion battery, but was eventually converted to a solid-state battery to give it a range of 600 miles, a 50% increase over the longest-range EV currently on the market.

The power source is a 268-horsepower electric motor located at each axle, each coupled to a single-speed transmission. Not bad considering that the vehicle weighs approximately 5,730 lbs.

The Dyson is built entirely around a modular platform intended to be used for at least two additional models.

For the interior, the designers combined all the controls into a steering wheel. In front of the driver are digital gauges and a heads-up display. And what about these oddly shaped seats? According to Dyson, they offer better lumbar support than conventional seats.

So what went wrong? Dyson decided that there were not enough economies of scale to make this project a success. Dyson's founder and chief engineer, James Dyson, revealed in an interview with The Sunday Times published in May that he had already invested 500 million British pounds (approximately $625 million) in the project. 150,000 British pounds per unit ), otherwise it would not break even. [Electric cars are] considerably more expensive to produce, and manufacturers are losing a lot of money on the sale of each car.

"This is because the sale of electric cars helps offset the profit the manufacturer is making on conventional cars.

But all is not lost. Dyson has pledged to spend EGP 2.5 billion to develop new technologies, including the solid-state battery that will power the N256. The solid-state battery is something of a Holy Grail for automakers, promising EV range that rivals that of internal combustion engine vehicles and recharging times that rival the speed of filling up with gasoline. While the technology exists, a major barrier is the economical production of batteries in the quantities needed for the auto industry, but researchers are confident that this can be overcome by 2025.
