The current Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, a seductive special edition, quietly takes the night away.

The new generation Mercedes-Maybach S-Class is just around the corner, but the current car still has much to offer.

Mercedes-Benz's ultra-luxury division reminded us of this on Tuesday when it unveiled the Mercedes-Maybach S650 Night Edition, now on sale as a 2020 model. Prices start at $243,945 including destination, and just 15 units will be sold in the United States.

The standard Maybach S-Class is already a special car, but the S650 Night Edition adds a few extras to make it even more special. These include carbon fiber accents inside and out (including a subtle trunk lid spoiler), custom 20-inch wheels with a dark finish, and a black and white leather trim combination. The front fenders and cabin will feature "Night Edition" badging.

Based on the Maybach S-Class S650 grade, this special edition is powered by a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 that delivers 621 hp and 738 hp of torque. This allows the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds, which is equivalent to a sports car. The top speed is limited to 155 mph.

To ensure a supple ride, the suspension system relies on a camera that scans the road ahead and adjusts damping. In addition, the system adjusts the vehicle's body to tilt in corners so that occupants do not feel the effects of body roll.

As for the next Maybach S-Class, it will most likely appear late this year or early next year. It will appear alongside the new generation S-Class, which will be unveiled shortly, but unlike its predecessor, the Maybach GLS will face new competition at the top end of the Mercedes range because of the recent arrival of the Maybach GLS.
