BMW X8 M Super SUV reportedly to feature electric V-8

BMW is developing a new flagship SUV that will likely be badged the X8.

It will be similar in size to the full-size X7, but will have sportier, more dynamic proportions, including a lower roof. And unlike the X7, the X8 will produce a high-performance X8 M variant, at least if the trademark application is any indication.

Autocar reported Monday that the X8 M is definitely on the way. The super SUV will reportedly be equipped with an electrified V-8 powertrain around 2022, specifically a plug-in hybrid setup with a combined output approaching 750 horsepower. Such output would make the X8 M BMW's most powerful road car to date.

According to Autocar's sources, the X8 M will have a single electric motor that produces 200 hp. If engineers adopt BMW's existing plug-in hybrid design, the electric motor would be sandwiched between the V-8 engine and transmission. Porsche has offered such a powertrain for years in its Turbo S E-Hybrid versions of the Panamera and Cayenne. This powertrain will also be available in future Mercedes-AMG models, with more than 800 hp expected; AMG will first use it in a new range-topping for the GT four-door coupe.

BMW's M division has already hinted at an electrified future with its 2019 Vision M Next concept, pointing to the possibility of a plug-in hybrid supercar to replace the discontinued i8 on the market.BMW's in-house tuner and motorsports division is also developing a battery-electric powertrain. An M-badged version of the next i4 battery-electric sedan is likely to appear, but probably only in a modest M Performance model. However, the next M5, due around 2024, will reportedly offer a choice of plug-in hybrid or battery-electric power.
