Spy shots of the 2023 BMW Alpina XB7: an update on the full-size SUV

BMW is about to give the X7 a mid-cycle update for the 2023 model year, but by the time the refreshed SUV hits showrooms next year, the folks at Alpina will have their own version ready.

Alpina is a semi-authorized tuner that has been making BMWs go faster for over 50 years, and their X7-based XB7 is one of the most desirable full-size SUVs in the business.

The original XB7 was introduced last year and sold out within months. This updated version should appear next year as a 2023 model.

BMW is about to introduce major styling changes to the X7 to match the redesigned look of the 7 Series sedan, also slated for the 2023 model year. This new look, which was heavily previewed in last month's Concept XM (pictured above), will add some serious aggression to the X7, and by extension, this XB7.

Alpina will add its own front lip spoiler and rear mask. The wheels will also have their own design, and the exhaust tips will feature a unique quad-pipe design. Alpina has traditionally tweaked the interiors of BMW vehicles. A new steering wheel, unique trim options, and Alpina's own graphics on the instrument cluster and infotainment system are typical Alpina features.

It is not clear what is going on under the hood, but there is no doubt that Alpina will stick with the V-8 twin turbo; BMW is known to be working on a new V-8 engine, but whether this engine will be in the updated XB7 not clear.

The current XB7 is powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that produces 612 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. Alpina claims a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 4.0 seconds, a top speed of 180 mph, and a quarter-mile time of 12.6 seconds.

Besides the engine, expect chassis upgrades and Alpina's own tuning of the X7's 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive system.

Pricing for the 2021 XB7 started at $142,295 including destination. A similar figure is expected for the updated model's sticker.
