Rear-wheel drive has been added for the Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder.

Lamborghini's Huracan Evo added a rear-wheel drive option in January. Not only does it offer a purer driving experience than the all-wheel-drive Huracan Evo, it is also less expensive.

On Thursday, Lamborghini unveiled a Spyder convertible version of the rear-wheel-drive Huracan Evo. Delivery is scheduled for the summer, with prices starting at $229,428 including destination charge, about $21,000 more than the coupe.

Lamborghini did not surprise here. The car's 5.2-liter V10 engine, which matches the coupe's 602 horsepower and 413 pounds of torque, sends drive to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Lamborghini claims a 0-62 mph time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 201 mph.

Naturally, the car delivers phenomenal performance, but Lamborghini says that RWD cars are not about straight-line speed or lap times. Rather, he says, the goal is to provide maximum enjoyment. For example, the sport setting of the P-TCS traction control system is tuned to allow the Huracan Evo RWD Spyder to skid and drift while limiting torque when oversteer is excessive. However, when switched to Corsa mode, the system adjusts to allow 30% oversteer.

The car's roof is an automated soft top that retracts in about 17 seconds and operates at speeds up to 31 mph. There is a weight penalty for ditching the coupe's fixed roof, and the convertible has a dry weight of 3,326 pounds compared to the coupe's 3,062 pounds. Most of the weight increase is due to additional body structure reinforcements. The reduced weight allows the coupe to reach 62 mph about 0.2 seconds faster than the Spyder.

The Huracan Evo RWD's competitors include the Ferrari F8 Spider, McLaren 720S Spider, and for some buyers, the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible.
